This poem is written as a monologue, meaning that it is written in both first and second person point-of-view. There is a clear narratorial voice (the “midnight woman” of the title), who occasionally uses first-person pronouns to indicate that she is the one speaking and acting throughout the poem.

The bulk of her dialogue in the poem, however, is externally, not internally, focused. She points it towards the poem’s other character, the bobby. Second-person uses “you” to address another person or group of people directly, as the speaker does to the bobby throughout most of the poem.
