Wetzel uses the literary technique of foreshadowing related to roosters. The sound
of a rooster is heard on the street, when Mantini opens the shop in the morning. Mantini comments on the rooster on Carla's skirt. The rooster symbolizes male confidence and the slang word, cock, for male genitalia. The symbol of the rooster early in the story will also come into play at the end of the story.
