Why are the Fishers unable to sell their home in the novel, A Map of Nowhere?

The Fishers' home has a crack in the concrete that runs against the back wall and through the foundations of the house so that "one day it will fall, as the ground shifts." The crack prevents the honest Fishers from selling their house as a means to improve their financial situation.
