What is ironic about Chief Nanga's political ideals in the novel, A Man of the People?

Chief Nanga came from a desperately poor background and proclaims himself a "man of the people, but in reality he seems to have little concern for the needs of poor people. Nanga also makes fun of people who are educated, but is excited that he is supposed to receive an honorary doctorate from an American college.
