Why does David not understand the reason for his mother's abuse as noted in the memoir, A Man Named Dave: A Story of Triumph and Forgiveness?

David does not understand why his mother abuses him because he does not see what he does wrong. David believes that he never did anything to justify the hate she for him, and therefore, the abuse does not make sense to him.
