Who is Black Tom from A Lost Lady and what is their importance?

Black Tom is Judge Pommeroy's servant. He is described as a loyal employee, who helps Mrs. Forrester with her dinner parties by waiting on tables. He also helps Niel in clearing the gossips out of the Forrester after Mr. Forrester has his second stroke.
