I like the fact that Beah is a "rapper" as a child. He enjoys American rap music and has a performance with his friends. This adds a layer of innocence and playfulness to Beah at the beginning of the story. The reader desperately hopes Beah can hold on to some of that through the narrative. It is a small detail but an important one as Beah navigates the darkness of the survival and violence.
