I might consider Tommy . Tommy was a carpenter in Freetown. He was also Ishmael's uncle. Tommy had never met Ishmael which adds complexity to when Beah finally seeks refuge with him. Tommy is pretty much a benevolent character. He cannot understand that the risks Beah takes, like getting food in the town, are normal for Beah.
