A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

a long way gone

“If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person, he or she will die” (p. 54). What kinds of thoughts help Ishmael gain perspective on his situation? What ideas and philosophies give him strength?

Thoughts of his family keep Ishmael alive, and his father's advice stays with him throughout. Ishmael held onto the hope that he would find something better ahead. At this point he is completely alone in the forest, where he wandered for what must have seemed like forever.
