Salva had a stable and happy family life. He had two sisters and two brothers. In chapter 1 Salva is daydreaming about hunting with his brothers, and thinking of eating the game they kill makes him hungry, but he knows that his mother will be waiting for him with a large bowl of fresh milk when he gets home.
