The story is set in a small town in Louisiana. The fact that it is a small town in the southern part of the US immediately sets the stage for gossip and intrigue. Most information spreads by word of mouth (changing often in the retelling). Racism compounds the problems in this rather insular town, making the setting a strong secondary character. Without this setting the story would not be plausible.
