The entire book revolvees around Grant trying to teach Jefferson a lesson. But, ironically enough, in order for Grant to teach Jefferson what it really means to 'be a man' he has to first understand what that is for himself. Jefferson dies peacefully because he finally 'gets it'. He understands what it means to take a stand for what he believed in and his death has greater impact than just his immediate family.
