What does pregnancy represent in the novel, A Kind of Freedom?

Pregnancy symbolizes hope for future generations. Over the course of the novel, each generation portrayed is in a more difficult financial position than the one before it. However, with each new pregnancy and birth, the characters become excited for the possibilities of future generations.
