Louise Levathes worked for National Geographic for ten years. She also writes for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and a variety of other publications. Levathes was a visiting scholar at The Johns Hopkins Center for Chinese and American Studies at Nanjing University, Jiangsu, China in 1990. Her work and studies gave her a basis for the book, When China Ruled the Seas: The Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne.
