A Feast of Snakes

What kind of symbolism is seen in "A Feast of Snakes"?

This is my question for a 5 page paper, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't end your response in the obvious symbolisms, and also if you provided textual evidence with page numbers.

The character of Joe Lon Mackey symbolizes those who have no support structure...... namely a caring family, school, or religion, and those whose social structures fail.
