Hemingway operates on the "iceberg principle". The reader is given surface information, in a way that only Hemingway can, and the reader uses that information to draw clear imagery of war or whatever Hemingway wishes to convey. His simple prose style actually activates our own imagination to paint the vivid picture Hemingway intends for us to see.
