The garden outside the father’s house is where much of the story takes place. There, the protagonist and Kikuko discuss their future and their past. Moreover, they reflect on the fact that the protagonist used to see a ghost by the well in the garden, and Kikuko talks to the protagonist about their late mother. The garden is crucial for character development in the story because it provides the setting for the two siblings to discuss their thoughts and feelings about their lives.
