The predominant theme in A Doll's House is that of gender roles. Nora is shown to be repressed and oppressed, held back from accomplishing all that she might have because she is a woman. Decided roles of motherhood, marriage, and other gender issues are explored. Likewise, the roles assigned to men is also explored, showing that they are as locked into assigned societal roles as are the women. Both often feel trapped.
