W. Bruce Cameron divides his novel A Dog’s Way Home into 28 consecutive, numbered, linear, and chronological chapters. The simple and straightforward approach to the novel is reflective of the narrator, Bella. Her life is measured in steps that force her away from Lucas, and then steps that ultimately lead her back to Lucas. Because that journey home is a step-by-step process, telling her story about her way home is also a step-by-step process for Bella. Each chapter therein becomes a kind of step in the process Bella takes to get home.
