W. Bruce Cameron tells his novel A Dog’s Way Home in language that is simple, gentle, and straightforward. As the novel is narrated by Bella, and Bella is a sweet, gentle dog, she uses no coarse or foul language. Given that Bella is a dog, her language is simple and straightforward because she will have realistically had no education of the kind that someone like Lucas or Olivia will have had. This includes straightforward and recognizable commands that range from “Go Home” to “Tiny Piece of Cheese” to “Go to Work.” These commands underscore the command-and-response nature of relationships between dogs and their owners, and makes the narration that much more authentic.
