The man and wife appear in Chapter One: A Coney Island of the Mind. As the couple walks through Golden Gate Park, the man carries a beat up flute, while the wife feeds grapes to squirrels. The couple sits and eats oranges without looking at each other, before the man takes his shirt off to sleeps. The wife watches the birds, lies down, and looks up, while fingering the old flute. When she finally looks at the man..... it is a look of terrible depression.
