"The largely autobiographical story, which takes place in the 1930s, describes the lives of seven-year-old Buddy and his elderly cousin Sook, who is Buddy's best friend. The evocative narrative focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season, and it also gently yet poignantly touches on loneliness and loss."

Mood: while the main character, Buddy, loves his older friend Sook, a Mood of saddness colors the short novel because they are friends circumstantially in that, the other adults, are too busy for them both.
Capote shows that there friendship develops in tenderness, but over time, they can't stay together because Buddy will grow older apart from Sook.

Themes: cross-generational friendship
loss
time passing that creates change
country life during the Depression
