Fourteen-year-old, Wendla Bergman, is quickly maturing physically, but has a long way to go before her emotional development catches up with her body. Wendla prefers being a little girl to a teenager, clinging to children's clothing. She does, however, acknowledge the changes in her body and embrace feelings of sexuality.... something that will leave her pregnant and even more vulnerable. Wendla dies after taking abortion pills given to her by her mother.
