One major theme in the story is individuality, specifically illustrated through Sammy's character, as he questions the right and wrong of how to treat customers. Sammy understands the rules, but he will not condone his boss' humiliating words to the girls. He believes that in approaching the girls, who knew they were breaking the rules, the situatio could have been dealt with decently..... without embarrassment.
