The motif in the graphic novel 300 is the motif of victory. The Spartans didn't have much doubt that they were marching off to die but a death by battle is the on;y way to die for a Spartan. The 300's feats span decades even till modern ages so even though The Persian king won Leonidus truly won as his name is still known.
