The phrase "Scramble for Africa" is used used to describe the invasion, occupation, colonization and annexation of African territory by European powers. This partitioning occurred during the period of New Imperialism, which lasted from 1881 and 1914. It is also referred to as the Partition of Africa and the Conquest of Africa.
