The goggles in Through the Tunnel serve as a symbol of sight, maturity, and experience. When Jerry puts the goggles on for the first time, they don't do what he expects. He doesn't see clearly, they come loose, and they are worthless. It isn't until Jerry learns how to use the goggles that things become clear.... and everything changes. Thus, Jerry learns to see through trial and error, and as he learns and matures, the goggles come to represent his experience and coming of age.
