The speaker has actually been dead for a long time and is reflecting on Death picking her up for a final "date". Death is a transition: a new experience so Dickinson chooses to personify death as a suitor. Death is not frightening but rather a gentleman. This is a more comforting and dignified version of the Grim Reaper we are so used to.
