While many soldiers did carry personal items with them, most did not carry along too many items. There just wasn't enough space or time or inclination (or they were lost). Secondly, rarely seeing enemy fire isn't factual. Most who were in Vietnam (if they were in the field) saw gunfire and were constantly moving around. There wouldn't be time to play constant long running games of checkers.
