There are many 'lessons', often called morals, to this story. It is told a lot like a parable (which is a story that teaches a lesson). The Pearl focuses on the main ideas of greed leading to ultimate destruction of a person's life, but also suggests that mankind has free will to determine the fate of their own actions (despite acts of God or the whim of nature). Lastly, the story has a deeper suggested moral which is that oppression of a culture ultimately makes losers of everyone involved.
