why is obies position an empty sacifice? , and how do the goal posts sybolize his sacrifice?

Because Obie feels as if he should have tried out for football, and he's throwing his highschool life out for an "empty" cause. The goal posts symbolize crucifixes that are empty, or so to speak. They are there but wthout a cause.
