Mentioned within the first few pages of Autumn "outdoors" is the colloquial (everyday) expression used by Claudia's community to refer to homelessness. It's simply the phrase "to put outdoors" like one would do with a cat shortened to the key word; extra layers of being excluded already in the word choice. (HINT) Note how Morrison defines the important difference between this happening because of landlords and homelessness caused by the black family themselves.
