The tone is reflective and subjective. Each narrator also tells the story of how the garden impacts him as an individual. Kim, for instance, plants the first lima beans hoping that her father will see what she is doing and know that she is his daughter. Ana realizes when she digs up what Kim buried and finds rooting lima beans that not everyone in her neighborhood is involved in illicit behavior. Nora sees the way Mr. Myles, the man for whom she cares, reacts to the garden and believes it would be beneficial to him to be able to plant his own garden. Sae Young tells how the garden gives her a place to interact with kind people in a non-threatening atmosphere, giving her an opportunity to heal after she was robbed at gunpoint.
