There were many instances where they avoided transport...and those where they were not able to avoid it. The first time they lied about their ages to receive a better work assignment. The other time they managed to position themselves so that they would not be selected for transport. There was a viable network among the camp inmates and Elie and his father were a part of it. In the end, they were transported from Aushwitz to Buchenwald where Elie's father dies.
