Bring out the significance of Golding's title 'Lord of the Flies'

The title, Lord of the Flies, refers to the devil (Beelzebub). Over the course of the novel, the boys lose all sense of civility. They become both literally and metaphorcally "dirty". As Jack's group becomes increasingly barbaric, they search for a symbol and embrace the Lord of the Flies as a god. The pig's head, used as an offering, is devoured by flies..... hence, the symbolism, the "lord of the flies".
