A theme in this story is how we do not always know people. In this story it applies to both Ben and Janet. Janet suspects her husband of murder and as the text progresses, she starts to realise what kind of man her husband is. The author hints this earlier in the story. "Perhaps - dictorial at times and moody." We learn that things are not always as they seem.
