I'm assuming you are describing the incident on the island where Huck builds a decoy fire to fool the men that are chasing he and Jim? Huck, as well as Jim later on in the novel, are running from all kinds of things...both literally and figuratively, so seeing an unknown campfire is a warning sign to them that people are nearby.
