Objective: Prelude: The Portrait Artist and Part 1, The Frontiersman: Chapters 1-8 The author sets up the beginning of George Washington's rise to power by introducing a little of his background. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about George Washington as a man before becoming a Revolutionary War hero and President of the United States.

1) Class Discussion: Lead the class in a discussion about George Washington. What did the students know about George Washington before reading this book? What do they know about George Washington now? Why was George Washington destined for greatness? What were Washington's character traits that would make him a great man? Do the students think Washington was a great visionary, leader, or both?

2) Group Work: Divide the class into small groups and have them research more about George Washington's life prior to his becoming President of the United States. Have them...
