Objective: Detailed Summary & Analysis The student will define the short story and classify Shirley Jackson's THE LOTTERY. The student will compare short stories to novels.

1. The teacher will open a discussion on the short story by determining what short stories the students are already familiar with. The discussion will center around keeping the short story focused on characters and action that takes place in a short period of time. The discussion will also include the surprise or twist ending to a short story. Students will mention famous short stories they are familiar with and discuss why they did or did not like them. The teacher will also give the names of some of the more famous short story writers. (Suggestions: O'Henry, Guy de Maupassant, Stanley Allin, Edgar Allen Poe, Rod Serling)
