• In this section, Sir Phillip and his wife give birth to their first and only child, a girl named Stephen, the name Sir Phillip picked out after the conception when he was praying for a boy.
• As a young girl, Stephen grows to have a crush on one of the housemaids, Collins. She becomes almost obsessed with the woman and is jealous when a new male servant starts spending his time with Collins.
