Objective

Objective: Part 1: Chapter 1, Prisoner's Base Merton begins his story with these words: "On the last day of January 1915, under the sign of the Water Bearer, in the year of a great war, and down in the shadow of some French mountains on the borders of Spain, I came into the world". The objective of this lesson is to illustrate how the time and place of a person's birth has an impact on his or her entire life.

1) Small group activity:
Divide the class into small groups of 3 or 4 students and have them make a list of the historical events that occurred near the date of January 1915 and then discuss how these events might have influenced Merton's childhood.
