Chapters One through Five

The objective of this lesson is to give students a short introduction to the author and the novel, looking at how an author's history affects his/her writing. Students will also look briefly at world events in the 1920-30s and the 1960s as a way to help them place the story and the author.

Lesson

1. Teacher Lecture/Class Discussion: Give students a brief biography of the author, Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, and tell them when the novel was published (1965). Have students take notes. For class discussion: How would Ngugi's childhood affect what he might write about? How would the time period in which he was raised? The place? His education? How big an impact do you think an author's personal history has on their work? Why?

2. Partner Work: Set up a T-chart, with one column labeled "1920s" and the other "1960s." Give...
