The Log of Sea Cortez was created to document the learnings and observations from the marine expedition undertaken by John Steinbeck and his friend. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the importance of proper documentation in such voyages.

Lesson

a. Debate: Divide the class into two and facilitate a debate on whether or not John Steinbeck was overreacting to the fact that books and charters were lacking in information. Does he really need information of past voyages? Why and why not?

b. For discussion: Ask the class to identify other means of incurring information other than books and charts. In the absence of the two, what can be the next best thing for a voyager to do?

c. Individual Activity: Ask each student to write an essay on what are the other instances when documentation is important or helpful as shown...
