The main protagonist of the novel, this man is an unruly youth who runs away from home several times before realizing his dream of living on the frontier. This man eventually becomes instrumental in the settling and colonization of the land later known as Kentucky and Virginia.


The leading Indian youth who originally was the youngest male child of the chief of the Shawnee Indians. His brother’s death, however, led him to be the next leader of his people. He dreams of uniting the entire Indian nation against the white settlers.
