Lesson 1 (from Frontmatter and The Blue Arm)
Published in 1983, Curse of Lono is Hunter S. Thompson's account of his time in Hawaii.
The aim of this lesson is to introduce the book.
1. Class discussion. What do the students already know about Hunter S. Thompson? What can the students tell about the book by looking at its cover and reading the title? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?
2. With the students look at the questions Thompson asks in the opening chapter. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Thompson poses. After ten minutes, ask the students to swap their work with another pairs and provide solutions to the questions. After fifteen minutes compare the student's ideas and for each one ask what will have to happen in the story for these answers to come true.
