It is told that the story is not very happy and very few happy things happen to them. They are talked about as if they are good and smart children but it says that they are very unlucky. The narrator explains that if you want a story with a happy ending then you need to read another book.

She has her hair pulled back. This shows that Violet is thinking about something. She is skipping stones and thinking about a way to have the stones retrieved.
