Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1, The Arrival)

Objective

The opening of Solaris follows Kelvin on a journey from the Prometheus into the Solaris research station. The purpose of this lesson is to understand the purpose and effect of this opening scene.

Lesson

1) As a class, read the opening scene of Solaris, as Kelvin approaches and lands at the research station. Have each student write his/her answers to the following questions: How does the scene make you feel? What do you expect, based on the opening scene? What information does it give you?

2) Discuss the students' reactions to the scene as a class. Introduce the idea that Kelvin is traveling away from the normal world and into a world of the strange, and that the opening acts as a transition, leading Kelvin away from reality, maybe even into a world of the subconscious. Get students' opinions on this idea, and ask whether it relates...
