Objective

Objective: Chapters One through Three The author of the novel is Augusten Burroughs. This lesson will introduce students to the book's author and help students become aware of the potential benefits as well as pitfalls and drawbacks of applying knowledge about any author to his or her work.

1) Class Discussion: With students, discuss (in generalities) the relationship possibilities between authors and their works. Some authors may place themselves or parts of themselves in their stories: Stephen King, for example, sometimes has a character (sometimes the lead character) be a writer in his stories and novels, or a Red Sox fan, or a musician, all of which King himself is. Is learning about the author's biography important in understanding or appreciating his or her work? If a novel has a narrator, can the reader assume that the narrator's voice is that of the author's? Why or why not...
