Because of the legend of treasure, many hunters had gone in search of and were injured, died, or never returned. Thus, Alfred Hatch Sr. forbids his boys to go there because of the danger.

The legend is that the pirate Red Ned Ockham buried his treasure on Ragged Island. The treasure was supposed to be gold and include a jeweled sword, called St. Michael's Sword.

As they proceed deeper into the cave, they reach a door with a seal and believe they have found the treasure. Johnny opens the door and Malin drops the match. When Malin lights another match, surrounded by a pool of blood and Johnny is gone.
