• The protagonist of the novel, Queenie, sends a text saying that she is currently in stirrups in the gynecology unit of the hospital.

• A second text notes, “Wish you were here” (1).

• Queenie then sends a third text with a row of Xs standing for kisses, noting that perhaps the addition will prove wrong her boyfriend Tom’s claim that Queenie is emotionally unavailable.

• As the technician performs an ultrasound, he leaves in the middle of the exam and brings two other staff members into the room.

• They all stand around looking at Queenie’s ultrasound, at which point she asks if they would like to go ask the janitor if he would like to give his opinion as well.
